R. Stevie Moore: The Unsung Father Of Lo-Fi

With thunderstorms overhead, Warmest Chord are currently holed up in self-imposed exile, house-sitting in rural Wiltshire. What better climate to indulge an afternoon with the unsung father of lo-fi, Mr R. Stevie Moore..?

Long before indie rock and DIY were accepted mainstays, he was the man who essentially spearheaded the home-brewed DIY approach. Since 1966 he’s been home-taping his own pop songs and hand-crafting playful wacky videos. His unpolished naive style belies some seriously deft songwriting. File next to the solo efforts of Todd Rundgren and Paul McCartney of the mid 70s era. Vocally he has as many different styles as Dylan (!) but he always remains consistently original.

His debut album ‘Phonography’ was described as an ‘outrageous collection of musical brain spillage’, and went on to get namechecked in Rolling Stone magazine’s ‘50 Most Significant Indie Records’.
